Art Has Always Been Part of the Story

I’m Allison Cohen, the mixed media artist behind Creative Alley Studio. I’m drawn to materials with character, expressive texture, and the unexpected combinations that emerge when paint, paper and found objects begin to interact.

Creativity has always been part of my story. I spent summers on Long Island with my grandmother, a fine artist who encouraged me to paint, experiment and create. Those early experiences sparked a lifelong love of art that later found expression in painting furniture for my children, friends and family.

My Inspiration

This original painting by my grandmother hangs in my home, serving as a daily reminder of the creativity and curiosity that first inspired my own artistic journey.

Before Creative Alley Studio took shape, I spent nearly a decade in an entirely different creative world: The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. Looking back, that experience became an unexpected foundation for the artist I am today.

Where Creativity Met Precision

My career in hospitality began in the kitchen. After spending my college summers as a line cook in a high-end Cape Cod restaurant, I joined The Ritz-Carlton, Boston in a culinary position.

I learned to think about structural design, visual balance, texture, proportion, and presentation. Every plate and display was its own composition. Without realizing it, I was training my eye for the same relationships that fascinate me in art today.

Eventually, I moved from the kitchen into catering, planning elaborate weddings, corporate events, and destination celebrations in Boston, Philadelphia, Naples, and Sarasota. I collaborated with chefs, florists, designers, entertainers, and families to transform ideas into immersive experiences.

A ballroom would begin completely empty. Then came the linens, flowers, lighting, menu, and hundreds of carefully considered details. Layer by layer, something entirely new emerged.

The ballroom was simply a different kind of canvas.

The Experience Matters as Much as the Art

Luxury hospitality taught me that creating something beautiful is only part of creating something memorable.

Excellence in customer service begins with listening, asking questions, understanding what matters, and why.  Exceeding client expectations is only possible through attention to the smallest of details, and recognizing the personal investment behind the project.

Today, Creative Alley Studio brings those lessons together with my lifelong love of art. Composition, texture, storytelling, experimentation, collaboration, and attention to detail all find their way into my work.

Whether you’re selecting an original piece or collaborating with me on a custom commission, I want the experience to feel thoughtful and personal from beginning to end. I’m not simply creating something to fill a wall. I’m creating artwork that becomes part of your space, your story, and your every day experience.

My process: Built Layer by Layer

Every piece begins differently, transitioning through layers of archival papers, found materials, paint, color and texture. As the composition develops, I add, remove, cover and reveal, allowing the work to evolve intuitively through movement, contrast and unexpected discoveries through the process.

Traces of each stage remain within the finished piece, some visible and others hidden beneath the surface. It’s this history within the layers that gives each work its depth, character and invitation to take a closer look.

01 — Foundation

Archival papers and found materials establish the first layer.

05 — The Final Piece

Layers of material, texture, color and intuition come together as one finished work.

02 — Exploration

Color, texture, and initial forms begin shaping the composition.

Additional layers create movement, contrast, and visual depth.

03 — Building

04 — Refining

Elements are covered, revealed, softened and strengthened as the composition evolves.
